Female Spanish athletes face pre-competition anxiety at the highest levels of competition

Pre-competition anxiety is one of the most common emotions experienced among athletes in high performance sport. It can cause both positive and negative effects, which makes the ability to manage this anxiety one of the most important parts of an athlete's preparation. This study analyzes the anxiety levels in athletes from the Spanish Women's National Track & Field Team who participated in the European Championships, the World Championships, and the Olympic Games. The study evaluates how these athletes cope with pre-competition anxiety by examining three variables in the moments prior to the competition-cognitive anxiety, self-confidence, and somatic anxiety-and the way these variables impacted the results achieved by these athletes. The study indicates that a significant difference exists between cognitive anxiety and self-confidence, which shows that the higher an athlete's self-confidence, the lower the levels of cognitive anxiety. Higher levels of self-confidence and lower levels of cognitive anxiety were also shown to have a positive impact on performance results.La ansiedad precompetitiva es una de las emociones más generalizadas en el deporte de alto rendimiento deportivo. Provoca efectos tanto positivos como negativos, por lo que el control de la misma es uno de los objetivos más importantes dentro de la preparación del atleta de alto nivel. El objeto de este estudio es analizar los niveles de ansiedad en las atletas españolas del equipo nacional de atletismo que participan en la máxima competición tanto a nivel español como en campeonatos de Europa, del Mundo y Juegos Olímpicos. Se realizó un estudio desde la perspectiva de cómo afrontan las atletas españolas la ansiedad precompetitiva a partir de las variables ansiedad cognitiva, autoconfianza y ansiedad somática, y la manera en que estas tres variables inciden en el resultado obtenido por las atletas españolas en el momento previo a la competición. Los resultados obtenidos muestran diferencias significativas entre la ansiedad cognitiva y la autoconfianza, lo que provoca que, a mayores niveles de autoconfianza, los niveles de ansiedad cognitiva sean menores. Esto les permite evitar los signos negativos que causa la ansiedad cognitiva, con lo que esta no afecta a su rendimiento

Periotrónico: XML en un periódico electrónico a la carta. Resultados y perspectivas

El Periotrónico es un periódico electrónico a medida. Se fundamenta por una parte en el empleo de JML, un lenguaje basado en XML, para la descripción de noticias, y por otra en un modelo de personalización de contenidos basado en el plegado (sólo se muestran a priori aquellas noticias cuya temática es de interés expreso para el usuario). Parte de la tecnología de control de personalización se realiza en el cliente lo que reduce la sobrecarga tanto del servidor utilizado como de las redes de transmisión necesarias. A partir de los resultados obtenidos, se pretende, en una segunda fase, el desarrollo de cuatro objetivos: utilizar un lenguaje estándar de marcas periodísticas, basado en XML, para la generación de noticias; fomentar la difusión inmediata de unos mismos contenidos periodísticos en diferentes soportes (PC, TV, etc.), mediante el uso de tecnologías como MHEG; favorecer la creación de comunidades virtuales, basándose en las preferencias aportadas por los clientes, que permitan el envío de contenidos periodísticos y publicitarios comunes; por último, mejorar la relación entre los diferentes contenidos informativos y las posibilidades de recuperación de información incluida en éstos. In the last years, there has been an increasing interest on security concerns in smart environments. In smart home environments the main goals are user comfort and easy deployment of new devices, so security is usually left apart or focuses mainly in transparency and privacy enhancement. Office security, however, has more rigorous security requirements due to the high number of potential users, devices and spaces, and the diversity of security roles. This paper presents a security solution for an agent-based architecture for the smart office. This security solution is potentially applicable to generic smart environments, but it suits particularly well to the smart office scenario, taking advantage of the particular characteristics of the environment to satisfy the security requirements

Methodological improvements in the final project of Civil Engineering Degree

The final project of an engineering degree represents a test of maturity where students must crossexamine all the contents studied in the degree which adds technical difficulties. Traditionally the students are supervised by only one teacher and they usually also take a previous course in the writing of the project. Currently, the program of the Civil Engineering Degree contemplates this activity in the last semester with an allocation of 18 credits. The hardest difficulty noted by students and teachers is the short time estimated for writing it. A teaching innovation project is presented herein which aims to define a working protocol in order to help the student in a more efficient and close way during the development of the task. Among the methodological changes introduced, it should be highlighted the tutoring by professors from different areas of knowledge instead of only one professor as it was traditionally done. Thus, coordination mechanisms must be implemented to guarantee the achievement of the proposed objectives. The innovation project also helps to identify tasks that can be advanced in time and gain time for the effective drafting of the project. Some other solutions found will be presented as well as a comparison of the results obtained along this year with those of the former methodology

Prensa en XML: el negocio de la personalización y la conquista de nuevos medios

Los periódicos electrónicos no han encontrado aún la forma de aprovechar completamente las posibilidades que les ofrecen los lenguajes de marcado, y en especial XML, así como la posibilidad de usar diversos medios de salida, con el fin de difundir a través de ellos una misma información (adaptando la profundidad de la misma a las posibilidades de cada soporte) consiguiendo que el producto sea rentable. El proyecto InfoMedia, que lleva a cabo un grupo de investigadores de la Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, se desarrolla sobre esta idea. Este texto expone los conceptos básicos (y algunas iniciativas ya desarrolladas) sobre los que gira el proyecto: la necesidad de contemplar los diversos medios (ordenadores, televisión, teléfono móvil...) accesibles mediante un mismo lenguaje, basado en XML; la posibilidad de establecer diferentes tipos de productos y, por tanto, diferentes formas de financiación y pago de los mismos; finalmente, la necesidad de determinar qué públicos distintos pueden existir y qué información necesitan.CICYT. Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus Envelope Protein Ion Channel Activity Promotes Virus Fitness and Pathogenesis

Deletion of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (SARS-CoV) envelope (E) gene attenuates the virus. E gene encodes a small multifunctional protein that possesses ion channel (IC) activity, an important function in virus-host interaction. To test the contribution of E protein IC activity in virus pathogenesis, two recombinant mouse-adapted SARSCoVs, each containing one single amino acid mutation that suppressed ion conductivity, were engineered. After serial infections, mutant viruses, in general, incorporated compensatory mutations within E gene that rendered active ion channels. Furthermore, IC activity conferred better fitness in competition assays, suggesting that ion conductivity represents an advantage for the virus. Interestingly, mice infected with viruses displaying E protein IC activity, either with the wild-type E protein sequence or with the revertants that restored ion transport, rapidly lost weight and died. In contrast, mice infected with mutants lacking IC activity, which did not incorporate mutations within E gene during the experiment, recovered from disease and most survived. Knocking down E protein IC activity did not significantly affect virus growth in infected mice but decreased edema accumulation, the major determinant of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) leading to death. Reduced edema correlated with lung epithelia integrity and proper localization of Na+ /K+ ATPase, which participates in edema resolution. Levels of inflammasome-activated IL-1b were reduced in the lung airways of the animals infected with viruses lacking E protein IC activity, indicating that E protein IC function is required for inflammasome activation. Reduction of IL-1b was accompanied by diminished amounts of TNF and IL-6 in the absence of E protein ion conductivity. All these key cytokines promote the progression of lung damage and ARDS pathology. In conclusion, E protein IC activity represents a new determinant for SARS-CoV virulence
